Chemistry Matter and Change by Thomas D. Le Wharton'There is always a catch,' was the formula by which Professor Sanford le Wharton developed chemistry matters and change. This epigraph tells us that chemistry is something as old as the human race, something which grew into and grew out of the artifacts and sources of knowledge that gave form to civilization, which, indeed, came to be defined by chemistry. The concept of chemistry, le Wharton was careful to point out, has been around for a long time.It comes as no surprise then, that the first time we ever encountered a molecule, it was as nothing more than a spattering of atoms. In fact, that is how much we were unprepared for the concept. We didn't realize that the entity which had been perceived as just a bunch of atoms and molecules was really an object that could interact with other entities and change them into something new.Chemistry really started with the chemist, and le Wharton's version of chemistry, 'Acres of Diamonds,' w as taken from his laboratory notebooks. It describes how he came to define chemistry. Le Wharton's relationship with the materials which would eventually become the paper that brought his chemistry to public attention was not just a coincidence. He was, in fact, really determined to write a book on chemistry.In essence, this book was a small but very big idea. The principles and concepts of chemistry were his big idea, the behavior of substances and their reaction to one another was his big idea, and the function of a molecule as a working unit was his big idea. Even though he lived hundreds of years before Einstein and Schrödinger, the basic ideas of chemistry were really what set him apart.Another interesting fact about his chemistry is that he did not, unlike Newton, think of chemicals as being the cause of change. He thought of molecules as mere containers for chemical reactions, he didn't consider chemical substances to have any inherent properties or characteristics of their own. Of course, as in our understanding of light and colors, there is really no such thing as a 'red' molecule, just as there is no such thing as a 'blue'green' molecule. That kind of dichotomy did not fit into his understanding of chemistry.What le Wharton found was that everything that is made up of matter and energy can change, that nature is constantly changing, and that it is through the motion of matter and energy that we create the environment in which we live. His views, however, did not center entirely on the dynamic interplay between matter and energy, though he did embrace the idea that the basis of matter was matter. He also thought that the electron was not the basis of all particles and that the 'elements' or groups of matter were not actually substances at all.Le Wharton's philosophy was much more significant than the way he approached the chemistry of his day. His understanding of the interplay between matter and energy is still relevant today. It is the reason that we can study the evolution of the life on earth through the chemical interactions that occurred in the environment, it is the reason that we can study the rise and fall of civilizations, and it is the reason that we can study the processes by which nature takes on the forms of buildings, cities, nations, and countries.

Ted Greene, Chemistry ProfessorIn 1956, Ted Greene was invited to join the Department of Chemistry at The University of Virginia. He was there for only six months, however, when his appointment was abruptly revoked and he was left without a job. For the next three years, he worked for the Foundation for American Chemistry Research (FACR) and did most of his research in that organization. While he was on staff with FACR, he did not complete any chemistry experiments himself, as he felt he was not qualified for the position.In 1957, after being laid off from FACR, he took a job with the Coca-Cola Company and in 1958 began his work with Seifert and Briggs, the department that was based in Virginia. During his years with these companies, he continued to grow in his understanding of chemistry, and by 1961, he became a full-fledged member of the school's faculty.In a ddition to his work with the company and the university, Greene had also written articles about chord chemistry for Popular Science Magazine, Time, and others. With his academic reputation established at the University of Virginia, Greene could now use his work for furthering the field of chemistry.In 1962, while working for Seifert and Briggs, Greene published the first edition of his book, The Science of Harmony, which included a book review, a chapter on plants, and a whole section devoted to chord chemistry. This book, as well as other works of Greene, were put together and published by a small publishing company in New York, called Chemical Heritage.While working for Seifert and Briggs, Greene also became an associate editor of Popular Science. In 1966, he joined the editorial staff of Time magazine, where he would later become a contributing editor.Greene, along with the support of Seifert and Briggs, continued to work with business and academic organizations to promote chord chemistry, and he continued to help establish the field of chemistry through scientific journals. For example, he worked with the National Academy of Sciences to publish the International Review of Chemistry.

The National Student Clearing House has created a database with information from over 93 million college students and over 3,300 colleges across the nation. This information allows The National Student Clearing House to present some high schools statistics on their graduates college success. The Washington Post published the statistics of one of the schools involved in the study. The school's 2004 graduating class was used to analyze results. 23.8% of students graduated from college; 15% were still attending college; 28.5% dropped out of college; 3% returned to college after dropping out, and 29.4% of students were not in the database. High School administrators can use this data to view the records of individual students. These high school administrators can see the classes that their most successful graduates took while in high school. Over 76% of high school students who scored a 3 or higher (a passing grade) an AP exam graduated from college. Also, 59.4% of students who took an AP exam and received a 2 or lower (a failing grade), which is still a much higher statistic than the 24.7% college graduation rate for students who did not take an AP exam. These numbers are not representative of all high schools. They only pertain to the unnamed high school that article cited. However, these numbers are likely to be very similar to most high schools statistics through The National Student Clearing House. This is very valuable data to high school administrators because they can build their curriculum around what helps students succeed in college. I Feel Like I’m Bribing my Child! What’s the difference between bribes and rewards Children with ADHD often need rewards and structure to help them succeed at challenging or mundane tasks and learn new behaviors. While rewards are a valuable ADHD management tool, its not uncommon for parents who use rewards to say that feel like they are simply bribing their child to get them to meet basic expectations. Its important to remember that kids with ADHD actually need rewards to help with motivation. However, bribes and rewards are two very things with very different effects on behavior. Rewards are something your child earns for their hard work and effort. They are established ahead of time, paired with clear expectations, and given only after the child has followed through. Rewards are part of a plan that parents are ultimately in charge of managing, and lead to positive interactions that foster feelings of accomplishment. When children are rewarded after a behavior they are more likely to repeat that same behavior again. Bribes, on the other hand are typically given to a child before they follow through desired behavior. Often they are used as a last resort, and as a result they frequently come about during a power struggle or negotiation. They rarely lead to long term changes in behavior. In fact, they often accidentally encourage negative behavior! Consider this example: A child is at a restaurant with his family. While hes waiting for his meal, he whines and complains about being bored, and is up and out of his seat bothering the diners at the neighboring table. This is an uncomfortable, common situation for many parents, and one everyone wants to change as quickly as possible. If you respond by pairing a reward with clear expectations youll remind your child that you agreed before dinner that first he would stay seated for the entire meal, and then as a reward he would be able to order dessert. Youll then give him an activity to keep him busy and praise his good behavior during the meal. Hell earn his reward, feel good about his effort, and have more motivation to stay seated the next time hes in a restaurant. If you respond by using a bribe, youll first ask your child repeatedly to stop getting out of his seat. When he doesnt comply youll feel frustrated and maybe even worry that the family dinner will be ruined. So, you resort to a bribe by asking your child if he will sit down if you give him a piece of candy. He takes the candy, sits down for one minute and then is up out of his seat again. In this case the bribe actually reinforced the childs negative behavior. He received candy while he was out of his seat, and was not required to first meet any expectations. Once the candy was finished, he stood up again because he was bored and restless, and had nothing motivating him to stay seated. Chances are hell leave the restaurant feeling bad about his behavior, and will not be motivated to behave differently next time. So, how can you avoid bribes and instead focus on constructive rewards? Set clear expectations ahead of time whenever possible, and share these expectations and the possible reward with your child. Using a When-Then statement can be helpful, When you stay seated for the entire meal, then youll be able to order dessert. Dont allow your child to negotiate about the reward in the moment, and make sure to provide rewards only when theyve been earned. This shows your child that you are in charge of the plan, and removes their ability to negotiate or engage in a power struggle. When rewards are used correctly, they can set your child up for success, reduce family conflicts, and teach your child that they can accomplish challenging tasks when they have the right motivation. So, rest assured that when you stick to a behavior plan that includes rewards, youre not bribing your child. Instead, youre using a valuable tool designed to help them manage their ADHD symptoms.
